Featuring the works of Poklong Anading Winner, 2006 Ateneo Art Awards Recipient, 2006 Ateneo Art Gallery Sydney Studio Residency Grant
10-19 November 2006 The Cross Art Projects and Satellite Project at The National Art School
Cross Conversations with Poklong Anading + Ramon E.S. Lerma, Curator, Ateneo Art Gallery and Closing Reception 18 November 2006, 4.00-6.00 pm
The Ateneo Art Gallery and the Cross Art Projects, Sydney, present "Anonymity," featuring the works of 2006 Ateneo Art Awards winner and 2006 Ateneo Art Gallery Sydney Studio Residency Grant Recipient Poklong Anading. The exhibition, which runs from 10-19 November 2006, consists of fourteen photographs in duratrans lightbox format depicting individuals who the artist randomly accosted on the street, and invited to pose with mirrors held in front of their faces - the resulting reflection of sunlight on the camera lens obliterating their identities. A satellite project is also being organized by The Cross Art Projects at The National Art School in collaboration with its curator, Katie Dwyer.
Jo Holder, Director of The Cross Art Projects, who selected Anading from among the three who received the Ateneo Art Awards, the Philippines' most prestigious annual contemporary art prize, for the Sydney residency this year says: "Anading's pun on the nature of photography is a good natured inversion of the physical process whereby light transforms image onto paper and the eye relays this image into communication with emotions and intellect. The inversion is a clever and accessible way to communicate: to his subjects and to the viewer."
"Street photographic portraiture usually isolates well-known unknowns momentarily isolated before they disappear into the mass. These images work in the reverse to the secular gaze: by resisting individuation they rise above everyday dullness and distraction. However, the work rises above the level of playful wit to announce the glimmers of reflected light as a beacon of the imagination and a reminder of impermanence. One thinks of comparisons with Bill Viola and religious painting tradition and iconography and the triumph of the anonymous masses!"
"This is original and lucid work with a keen sense of enquiry. Anading clearly is an experienced communicator of new perspectives. His originality likes in his willingness to engage with audiences. It is interesting to note how he re-visits earlier debates on the relation between community networks and artistic avant-garde."
The Ateneo Art Awards are presented annually by the Ateneo Art Gallery, the premier museum of mdern and contemporary Philippine art, to Filipino artists or collectives aged 35 years or under for significant work presented in an exhibition held at any public venue over the past year. The two other artists who received the Awards in 2006 are Maya Muñoz and Mideo Cruz.
As part of his grant, which provides him with roundtrip airfare, accommodation and an allowance, Anading will also travel to Melbourne and Bendigo in Victoria courtesy of La Trobe University as part of its 2006-09 Arts Linkage Program with the Ateneo de Manila University.
An exhibition catalogue, with an essay by artist, independent curator and 2006 Ateneo Art Awards juror Jose Tence Ruiz will be available.
For more information about this exhibition, please contact Jo Holder at joholder@aic.net.au or Ramon E.S. Lerma at rlerma@ateneo.edu

JUMPCUT was first launched in 1999 at the now defunct Big Sky Mind as a platform for young Filipino independent filmmakers showcasing works that were not essentially film or video, but rather paintings that indicated a drastic departure from their usual medium. Coming full circle from that attempt to cross-practice in the visual arts, JUMPCUT 2 returns with a collection of video works by filmmakers operating within the loop of the independent art scene and alternative art spaces in Manila such Green Papaya Art Projects, Future Prospects, Furball, and Black Soup . The collection takes on specific references to Pinoy pop culture, and the pleasures and tragedies of everyday life in Manila as a vast underdeveloped metropolis, and reflects a vibrant community that continues to nourish its own independence.

Today, August 29, 2006 will be my last day here at work. I'll have the rest of the week to relax and by Monday, I'll be starting my training with another company. I've gained and lost a lot of friends during my stay here.
IF MY SCHEDULE allows it...I PLAY TENNIS. I've been playing tennis since I was 8. It was pretty serious because I would go to Phil-Am after class to attend my training with Coach Bobot. Oh man...it was child abuse. I mean, mumurahin ka nya hanggang ma-perfect mo yung drills. Then comes the tournaments...I remember having a hard time playing those games because some age-grouper I like was watching me. =P
Which suddenly reminds me of a very interesting conversation...
Papa: Magaling din yan. May potential hindi lang siniryoso. Jun: Ano po nangyari? Papa: Eh mas pinili mag boyfriend. Nangingitim na daw sya at baka hindi maligawan. Jun: Ah maagang lumandi?!
I may not know who the hell are ranking now but atleast I KNOW HOW TO HIT A TOPSPIN SERVE!
The weather is just sinful. Jun and I spent the whole day in bed yesterday. You could just imagine how hard it was for me to get up and leave the baby this morning. What makes it worse is that we're doing a Desperate Housewives marathon which means I haven't had a shut eye since we woke up yesterday afternoon. I didn't expect to so get hooked to Wisteria Lane gossip.
I just need to be under the sheets with Jun. I already miss the baby and I badly need some sleep..ZZZzzzzzzzzzz
A few days ago Jun and I went to the Barbershop. I've accompanied Jun before but this visit was a lot different from the previous ones because I'LL BE HAVING MY HAIR CUT TOO. Yes, in a barbershop. So there we were... Jun and I sitting side by side. We were constanly looking at each others hair and teasing. I love my new hair. Unfortunately I didn't get to experience the famous MASAHENG BARBERO nor KWENTONG BARBERO. But it's all good.
I know I haven't been posting for quite some time. So here's a little extra... DID YOU KNOW...?
She’s a Filipino-American single mother who went to college in Bukidnon. A porn star running for GOVERNOR OF NEVADA as a REPUBLICAN.
Melody Damayo, 32, better known as Mimi Miyagi, is an ex-porn star. She is the busty, sizzling, Japanese manga-looking sex queen in such triple-X-rated films as “China Vagina” and “Seoul Train.”
CLARISSA DOLL was discovered dead at a home in Las Vegas this week. She was 26.
Veteran director/producer Joe Gallant, who was close to Doll, said details of her death are unclear, but added that it appears she took her own life.
A former Budweiser Girl, Doll made her porn debut in 2004’s The Luv Generation which an AVN Award for best pro am in 2005. She also was featured in Manhattan Girls and in Wild in the Streets.
Remember CLUELESS? Then you might remember Stacey Dash. Can u imagine that she's already 40!!! Nothing much to say - just look her up at the latest PLAYBOY.
I know all of you have been wondering... I know I have...
The Feté de la Musique, a music festival held every year during the French Spring celebrations here in Manila is scheduled this JUNE 30 at the SM MALL OF ASIA. Enjoy music from different genres: world music, lounge, blues, jazz, rock, reggae, alternative all in one night!
There. I've said it. I can't really put into words my exact sentiments because I miss my baby real bad. He left last Friday for Bohol. He's been gone for three days and it felt like eternity. I have to wait four more nights. That's four more sleepless nights for me. Believe me... I'm not exaggerating. This is the longest Jun and I have been apart.
What makes things a lot worse is receiving a mail from an old college friend...
CONGRATULATIONS TIFFY and ERWIN!!!
Well nothing breaks the ice than receiving a text message from the love of my life saying...
JUN : Pag dating ng time mag ta travel din tayo. D lng sa Pilipinas sa buong mundo, ca camping, hiking, diving at SPACE TRAVEL. HEHEHE
When I arrived past 10pm at Cubao X, I was surprised to see that a lot of people attended SINEMALAYO. I mean, you should really give credit to these two guys for such a successful event last night. And, it's not just the Pablo crowd that stacked the place because they packed up real early. So...
Thank you for everyone who attended and supported SINEMALAYO. This is not the first time, rather just a start of something big.
and
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY MOM!!!
Ma, we may not have the perfect mother-daughter relationship, but still you will be the mom whom I'll go to St. Jude and light candles with or go to Quiapo to see a fortune teller. You are one in a million. I remember when I used to cry because of heartbreak you'd tell me "HAY NAKU!!! THERE'S A LOT OF FISHES IN THE OCEON...". How we used to get drunk with Ate and you'd start swaying to Barry White's MY FIRST.. MY LAST.. MY EVERYTHING. Those were the good old days and such good memories.
We went through a lot of DRAMA. And thank God everything's okey now. I LOVE YOU and today's your day! See you tonight! =)
